Welcome to St Johns Gramnar School!
Congratulations on your fantastic decision to join our school Community! We are fortunate to have a vibrant and enthusiastic Parents and Friends (P&F) Committee who are committed to building a connected Parent Community, so we thought we would let you know who we are and what we have to offer, in order to help you settle in.
We use facebook for many of our informal communications. Parents and Friends administer the ‘Parents of St Johns Grammar – Open Communications’ page, and we recommend you request to join this for news and information about our activities.
The official school page ‘St Johns Grammar School’ is also worth joining, and is good for official photos and news of school events and occasions.
All year levels also have their own page – they are labelled ‘SJGS Class of xxxx (Year y)’ (xxxx is the year your child will be in year 12 and y is their current year level). These pages are great for all those year-level specific enquiries, such as excursions and camps, lost PE jackets, social gatherings and the like.
This can be very confusing, especially with different uniform requirements for PE, normal school days, and for extracurricular sports.
Here are links to Uniform Guides.
Purchasing Uniform can either be at the New Uniform Shop on the Secondary campus or the Secondhand Uniform shop at the Junior Campus Chapel (run by P&F volunteers). The Website has information about both the Uniform shops including opening hours, online ordering, etc. As the secondhand shop is run by volunteers, opening days/times can vary depending on who is available to help. We advertise these on the website and on the Facebook page on a term-by-term basis. For any questions, feel free to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will try and help!
Parent Buddy system
P&F coordinate a New Parent Buddy system, where we connect a new parent with a current parent, hopefully with a similarly aged child. This can help provide support to an incoming family, to help with all those parent-relevant questions like ‘what do they wear on casual day?’ and ‘how do I order lunch from the canteen’. If you would like to register to be linked with a Buddy to help with your transition, please follow this link: https://parents.stjohns.sa.edu.au/getting-started/parent-buddy-program/.
Flexischools is the platform used by the school to order Canteen recess and lunches, and also Uniform items. Just download the app, create a login and you’re in! There are daily specials along with regular lunch and snack items. There is no canteen based at the Junior campus, lunches are ordered and delivered from the Secondary campus to the Junior campus at lunch time.
The app is also the place to order all your uniform items. If you know what size you need there’s no need to wait for the shop to open. Simply order and collect from the Junior Campus front office / Retreat House as required.
Do you like to sing? Are you envious of the wonderful opportunities our children have to be involved in choirs and receive vocal tuition? We have a Parents Choir called Parental Guidance Recommended (PGR) who meet weekly to sing together, and are always happy to welcome new members. For more information about this group, email Katrina Vogt email@example.com or request to join their Facebook page ‘Parental Guidance Recommended – St John’s P&F Choir’
P&F aim to organize a number of Social events through the year, to give our community opportunities to get to know each other. In 2022 we have a Mums night and a Dad’s night planned in Term 1, and are planning a mid-year Quiz night Term 2/3 then hopefully a Spring family picnic in Term 4. Information about these events and others throughout the year will come out in the Weekly Update and on our Facebook page, so keep an eye out as the year gets underway.
Junior School Connection P&F team
P&F have a team of Junior School parents that are in charge of coordinating P&F activities on the Junior Campus. These activities include coffee mornings for parents, movie nights, teacher gifts, barbecues among other things.
The P&F coordinate a barbecue for the Junior School children at our Sports Events, including Swimming Carnival, Athletics Carnival, Cross Country and also the two Junior School Fun Days that are held at the end of Terms 1 and 3. Information about ordering food gets sent out to parents along with event information, and we then organize the barbecue. We are often looking for helpers to cook and serve food on the day, so watch out for opportunities to be involved!
How to contact teachers?
The best option is to email directly. All staff have a St Johns email address with the format ‘FirstinitialSurname@stjohns.sa.edu.au’ (example RAnderson@stjohns.sa.edu.au). If you are unsure of the teacher’s name, you can find them listed with your child’s timetable on the Synergetic portal.
How can I access contact details of other parents?
The synergetic portal has a tab along the top called ‘parent contacts’. You need to share your own details first, then can access details of parents of other children in the same year level as your child. If you are looking for parent details in other year levels, or if the parent in question hasn’t shared their details, you may need to initiate contact via the front desk staff (Carol Brown senior school at Retreat House, Mandy Hooper middle school office, or Lara Jones for Junior school). They are usually happy to forward an email on your behalf.
If you have issues with IT, either with the school-issued laptops or with other student IT systems, Dustin Fisher (DFisher@stjohns.sa.edu.au) is the person to contact. He may be able to solve the problem directly, or can direct you or your child to the IT Helpdesk (in the TLC on the Secondary Campus, or XXXXXXXXXXXX on the Junior Campus).
